Definition of Sludge

According to the Ministerial Regulation on Sanitary Management of Waste, B.E. 2561 (2018), sludge refers to the solid residue left after the treatment of waste.

In the Thai Science and Technology Dictionary (NSTDA), sludge is defined as a solid substance separated from water or wastewater, which settles at the bottom.

Additionally, the Royal Institute Dictionary, B.E. 2554 (2011) describes sludge as a substance dissolved in water or other liquids that aggregates and sinks to the bottom of a container.

Types of Sludge

Sludge can be classified into three main types as follows:

  1. Solid Sludge

    • This type includes paint dust, polishing powder, and sludge from various treatment systems.
    • It has a dry texture and can be crumbled by hand.

  2. Semi-Solid Sludge

  3. Liquid Sludge

    • This is a highly fluid sludge that can be extracted using a vacuum truck.
    • It closely resembles water in consistency.
    • Major source: Various wastewater treatment systems.

  1. Landfilling

    • Sludge is analyzed to determine whether it is hazardous or non-hazardous.
    • Different landfill sites are designated for different types of sludge.
    • Hazardous sludge must undergo neutralization treatment before disposal.

    • Dust or sand from polishing processes is mixed with cement to produce interlocking bricks or lightweight bricks.
