Why Industrial Waste Should Never Be Disposed of with General Waste

A garbage collector collapses unconscious beside a waste truck…

The bag he picked up was not ordinary household waste.

It contained industrial chemical waste that had been illegally mixed into a black garbage bag. As temperatures rose, toxic gases were released from the waste, severely damaging his lungs and requiring immediate hospitalization.

This is not a fictional story.

The illegal disposal of industrial waste remains a serious issue in many areas, causing significant environmental damage and affecting the health and well-being of local communities. Once contamination occurs, restoring the environment to its original condition is often extremely difficult—and sometimes impossible.

In 2023, Thailand generated approximately 19.82 million tons of industrial waste, consisting of 18.69 million tons of non-hazardous waste and 1.13 million tons of hazardous waste. The major challenge is that available treatment and disposal facilities can handle only around 300,000–400,000 tons annually. As disposal costs can range from 10,000 to 20,000 THB per ton, some operators seek to reduce expenses by using unauthorized transporters and illegal disposal services.

Unfortunately, many factories still believe that “putting it in a black garbage bag is enough.”

The reality is very different.

Industrial waste possesses characteristics that ordinary household waste does not. When industrial waste is mixed with municipal waste inside collection trucks, landfills, or transfer stations, it can trigger uncontrolled chain reactions that pose risks to workers, nearby communities, and the environment.

Now imagine the alternative.

If your facility has a proper industrial waste management system in place, you will not have to worry every time regulatory authorities announce stricter inspections. You will not risk seeing your company’s reputation damaged by reports of improper waste disposal. Most importantly, you will not carry the burden of responsibility for potential harm to the surrounding community.

That is the difference between a factory that can operate sustainably for decades and one that faces shutdown due to preventable environmental violations.

Proper industrial waste management is not simply about regulatory compliance—it is about protecting people, preserving the environment, and safeguarding the future of your business.
