All Eyes on CBD COP16 This October: Why Is the U.S. Still the Only Country Not Participating?

In recent decades, human development and environmental degradation have put the world’s biodiversity at significant risk. The number of species at risk of extinction is rapidly increasing, with over 44,000 species identified as threatened in 2023. Land use and changes in marine utilization are the primary threats to biodiversity, accounting for 50% of all threats.

Conserving biodiversity is therefore crucial and requires cooperation from all sectors to ensure that our world maintains a rich and sustainable biodiversity. This has prompted countries to recognize the importance of the Convention on Biological Diversity Conference of the Parties (CBD COP).

The CBD COP 16 will serve as a platform for countries to showcase their strategic plans and actions related to biodiversity in alignment with the Kunming-Montreal Framework. This conference represents an important opportunity for enhancing international cooperation and efforts to conserve biodiversity worldwide.
