China is transforming its energy infrastructure by China Repurposes Oil Pipelines into CO₂ Transport Networks to Cut Emissions

China is transforming its energy infrastructure by repurposing existing oil pipelines to transport carbon dioxide (CO₂), as part of Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) technology. This approach helps address transportation challenges in remote areas, reduces investment costs by up to 40–80%, and accelerates the expansion of carbon management networks.

A pilot project by PipeChina in Henan Province successfully transported CO₂ over a distance of 27 kilometers. The captured carbon is then injected into oil fields for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR), increasing oil production while safely storing CO₂ underground.

This development highlights China’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve its climate goals—peaking carbon emissions by 2030 and reaching carbon neutrality by 2060—by maximizing the value of existing infrastructure in a more sustainable way.
