Ministry of Energy Introduces “Carbon Mapper” – A New Innovation to Monitor Greenhouse Gas Emissions, the Cause of Global Warming

The Ministry of Energy recently posted on Facebook about “Carbon Mapper,” a new innovation designed to monitor greenhouse gas emissions, which contribute to the phenomenon of global warming.

What is Carbon Mapper?

Carbon Mapper is a nonprofit organization with a mission to track and help reduce methane and carbon dioxide emissions worldwide.

In collaboration with partners such as NASA, Carbon Mapper has developed an advanced monitoring tool under the same name. This technology is designed to identify and track the sources of greenhouse gas emissions, with a focus on Super-emitters—the largest contributors to emissions. These include:

  • Fossil fuel industries
  • Landfills
  • Agricultural sectors

Carbon Mapper utilizes Imaging Spectrometers to detect and analyze these emissions.

How Does Carbon Mapper Work?

This tool is integrated into a satellite-based Earth observation system. By combining satellite imaging with advanced monitoring techniques, it can:

  • Accurately locate emission sources
  • Measure emission levels with high precision
  • Overcome past limitations of satellite technology, which previously could only detect emissions in large areas with low resolution

Unlike older technologies, Carbon Mapper can detect even small leaks, such as those from underground and above-ground gas pipelines.

The Future of Carbon Mapper

A key objective of Carbon Mapper is to develop actionable data that can be used to:

  • Plan effective emission reduction strategies
  • Combat global warming
  • Support global efforts toward a low-carbon society (Net Zero)

By enhancing our ability to monitor and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, Carbon Mapper plays a crucial role in advancing climate solutions and achieving sustainable environmental goals.
