Study Reveals: Nearly One in Four Freshwater Species at Risk of Extinction, Threatening Ecosystem Stability

New research shows that nearly one in four animals living in rivers, lakes, and other freshwater habitats is currently at risk of extinction — a crisis that could severely disrupt ecosystems around the world.

Although freshwater ecosystems — including rivers, lakes, ponds, streams, swamps, and wetlands — cover less than 1% of the Earth’s surface, they are home to approximately 10% of all known animal species. These species now face growing threats that could lead to widespread extinction in the near future.

A collaborative study by researchers from the UK and Brazil examined around 23,500 species of freshwater-dependent animals, including fish, crabs, dragonflies, and others. The findings were alarming: 24% of freshwater species worldwide are classified as threatened, endangered, or critically endangered.
