Researchers Warn Global Boiling Could Trigger Volcanic Eruptions at 100 Sites in Antarctica

Melting Ice in Antarctica Could Trigger Over 100 Subglacial Volcanic Eruptions, Researchers Warn

Researchers have revealed that the ongoing ice melt in Antarctica could potentially trigger volcanic eruptions at more than 100 underground sites, and may further accelerate the continent’s ice loss.

A team from Brown University in the United States created a simulation model to study the melting of Antarctic ice sheets. Their findings suggest that the reduction in ice mass could lead to subglacial volcanic eruptions — eruptions occurring beneath the ice — which may become more intense in the future.

The Geological Nature of Antarctica’s Subglacial Volcanoes

Volcanoes aren’t limited to towering mountains with visible craters, like Japan’s iconic Mount Fuji. There are also underwater volcanoes and volcanoes buried beneath ice sheets. In Antarctica, researchers have identified over 100 volcanic hotspots beneath the ice.
