Thailand bans the import of ‘plastic waste’ effective January 1, 2025, with a grace period from December 17 to 31, 2024.

The Ministry of Commerce, through the Department of Foreign Trade, has issued regulations to set import measures for plastic waste in two documents, aimed at protecting the environment and safeguarding public health. This action is in line with the policy to regulate the import of plastic waste, which the Cabinet approved on February 21, 2023.

The issue of plastic waste is a significant problem that harms the environment and the lives of Thai people, with a trend of increasingly severe consequences. Therefore, there is an urgent need to address this problem. Recently, Ms. Arda Fuangthong, the Director-General of the Department of Foreign Trade, revealed that the Ministry of Commerce has issued regulations concerning import measures for plastic waste, as the Cabinet had previously approved the principles of the draft announcement by the Ministry of Commerce on December 3, 2024. This announcement was officially published in the Royal Gazette on December 16, 2024.
