The Seafloor: An Invisible Landfill

A study led by the University of Barcelona reveals that the ocean floor is becoming one of the world’s largest waste accumulation sites. In some areas, debris exceeds 1 million items per square mile, with over 62% consisting of non-biodegradable plastic.

Ocean currents carry this waste into deep-sea basins, where it accumulates and threatens more than 700 marine species through entanglement, toxic exposure, and “ghost fishing” from abandoned gear.

Experts warn that if current trends continue, the oceans could contain over 3 billion metric tons of waste within the next 30 years—highlighting a critical truth: what sinks does not disappear, but continues to silently damage marine ecosystems.
