Global Warming, A Heated World – A National Crisis That Must Be Addressed: Unveiling the “Global Warming Response Plan” for 2025 – Thailand Accelerates Risk Data Development Towards Becoming ASEAN’s Carbon Hub
It is undeniable that global warming and climate crises are escalating worldwide, and Thailand has been significantly affected. In 2024, the country faced numerous climate-related challenges, prompting relevant agencies to take action in developing measures to combat the “heated world.”
Dr. Phirun Saiyasitpanich, Director-General of the Department of Climate Change and Environment, outlined Thailand’s 2025 climate action plan, emphasizing the urgency of accelerating risk data development. He stressed the need to prioritize risk assessments at the provincial, district, and sub-district levels to ensure timely responses to climate-related events. The past year highlighted gaps in risk data at the local level, leaving many areas unprepared for natural disasters. To address this, Thailand plans to enhance early warning systems to provide timely alerts to the public, enabling faster adaptation.
Regarding carbon credits, Thailand will collaborate with the Stock Exchange of Thailand to advance voluntary carbon credit trading with transparency and legal compliance. The country is also pushing forward with the Climate Change Act, aligning with government policies to establish Thailand as ASEAN’s Carbon Hub.
In 2024, Thailand aims to lead ASEAN in climate initiatives by expanding T-VER and Premium T-VER standards across nine ASEAN countries. Additionally, Thailand, as a regional leader in cement industry decarbonization, will share expertise with neighboring countries to set an example for sustainable practices.
Moving into 2025, Thailand is committed to achieving concrete carbon reduction goals and refining regulations for international carbon credit trading. Public consultations are currently underway to ensure practical and effective implementation.
Furthermore, Thailand seeks to attract foreign investment to support high-cost climate technology solutions, particularly in agriculture and other key sectors, facilitating a smooth transition in these challenging times.
