Waste Overflow in Bangkok: A Problem Everyone Must Help Solve

Bangkok is facing a serious waste management challenge, producing more than 9,000–10,000 tons of waste per day. Managing this enormous amount costs the city around 7 billion baht per year, or approximately 23 million baht per day. Beyond the financial burden, common waste disposal methods such as landfilling release methane gas, a greenhouse gas that is 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide in contributing to global warming.

The main causes of the waste problem include improper waste disposal, excessive consumption and packaging, and inefficient waste management systems. To address this issue, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration introduced a new waste management fee policy starting October 1, 2025. Households that separate their waste will pay 20 baht per month, while those that do not separate waste will pay 60 baht per month.

Separating waste at the source is therefore a key step in reducing waste, lowering greenhouse gas emissions, and improving the efficiency of urban resource management—helping create a cleaner and more sustainable city for the future.
